Tania Ramírez Leads the Fight for Children’s Rights
The Red por los Derechos de la Infancia en México (REDIM), a fellow organization from Propel Fellowship Cohort 3, promotes data transparency and case dissemination for the future of Mexican children.
REDIM was founded 24 years ago, shortly after Mexico ratified the Convention on the Rights of the Child*. Its purpose goes beyond providing assistance; it aims to recognize children as rights holders and strengthen the influence other institutions can have. They have driven a shift in the perception of children’s rights, from spreading information for cultural change to coordinating over 80 organizations working in this area.
Their Executive Director, Tania Ramírez, tells us:
“Data analysis and dissemination help us measure and expose a problem that is still invisible to many.”
She also notes that introducing digital tools has been the foundation of their nationwide impact. They moved from printing 2,000 reports and holding dozens of press conferences to streamlining everything into interactive Tableau dashboards and a new blog to share data internationally. For REDIM's Head of Indicators, Fernando Salas, this has been key to their impact:
“Data is a tool that strengthens us as a society to demand rights guarantees.”
Julio Valdivieso and Fernando Salas joined Propel Fellowship in 2022 for Cohort 3. They believe their experience in our program helped “open their eyes” to rethink their digital strategy. Fernando says:
“It helped us create a digital strategy for REDIM, assess the steps we were taking, and reorganize ourselves.”
Thanks to their work, they are now expanding into new international projects. Tania shares that they are working on defending migrant children in collaboration with Central American countries, and mapping the situation of children with incarcerated parents across Latin America.
In this regard, she believes that strengthening the community and coordinating the efforts of social organizations has been crucial. She adds:
“Our work has been possible thanks to sharing information. This helped us contribute to strengthening the social ecosystem and promoting transparency.”
REDIM’s focus remains on advocating for children’s rights in Mexico and now at an international level, aiming to strengthen human communities across Latin America.
